A Just or Unjust God?

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can’t reach. So you get what we had here last week – which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don’t like it any more than you men.”

Most of us have heard this famous quote from the movie, Cool Hand Luke.  The person, the warden is talking about, is Luke, a rebellious prisoner who will not follow the rules no matter what punishment has been delivered.  He is dead set on doing it his way.  I thought it would play nicely to what  a friend shared with me the other day when he was asked this question;  How can a just God condemn a man to hell?

Well, is God condemning the man or is the man condemning himself?  Many people, while trying to trip us (Christians) up, will paint a picture of a punishing God, depicting God sitting on a throne giving the preverbal thumbs up or down.  Man is just a helpless soul, whose intentions are always good, doing the best that he can, under the circumstances God put in motion.  How can a god do this to man, when he put him in this mess to begin with. The only conclusion you can make is that God might be an unjust God.  They don’t say God doesn’t exist but they throw it out as a reason not to worship God.  The ultimate fist in God’s face.  You see the picture;  the question is asked upon a supposition.  The story is started somewhere in the middle and not the beginning.  From this depiction, God should not be revered because he will treat you the same way as the helpless schmuck out there under God’s thumb.
